Serverless is more FinDev than DevOps

A lot of the discussions around serverless has been about the benefits it brings to the table with regards to DevOps - more infrastructure automation, scalability and resilience out-of-the-box. Developers love it because they can offload even more undifferentiated heavy-lifting to their cloud vendors, and they can focus their energy on building the things their users want. Businesses benefit hugely too because they have happier developers who can deliver value faster! But the true power of the serverless paradigm, for the business, is the pay-per-invocation model. It allows them to finally understand the cost of user transactions, and calculate the return on investment of features. And if you embrace this superpower then it can even open the door to an entirely new business model built around pay-per-transaction and give your business the competitive advantage over your rivals.

Artificial intelligence has been expanding across several areas of our daily lives by getting embedded into billions of smart objects and IoT devices. Securing such devices presents a number of unique challenges, since they are deployed in uncontrolled, complex, and often hostile environments. Smart devices currently apply Machine Learning techniques to detect and mitigate security issues as they occur. The ever-increasing number of new security challenges however, requires them to predict and proactively protect against potential threats that may occur in the future by utilising Deep Learning techniques. In this talk, we will discuss the security challenges facing the IoT networks, as well as desires and requirements for developers to make the journey from Machine Learning to Deep Learning.

Unfortunately, the Cloud is not a massive computer, with a single execution model. It is made of heterogeneity, it delivers various compute environments, multiple programming models and countless ways to store data. But fortunately, most of these little parts of Internet are accessible through APIs, so it becomes acceptable to think about using them as building blocks, and switch from programming for one specific cloud, to programming The Cloud as a whole. Chaos Engineering: Breaking your systems to make them unbreakable

In this presentation, I'll share why you shouldn't just embrace failure, but why you should induce it to intentionally cause and learn from failure. This presentation will start with some basic information on why you should start running Chaos experiments (sometimes called Game Days), how we run them at Datadog, and how to start implementing them within your organization. We'll then get hands on and run a Chaos experiment—breaking a sample application and investigating the results to learn more about how systems and applications work.

Monitoring with InfluxDB 2.0 and Flux

This talk will introduce InfluxDB 2.0, an open source time series database and monitoring system, and Flux, a new open source scripting language and query engine. We'll cover the motivations for the creation of both and look at the design goals for the projects. InfluxDB 2.0 is focused on providing a complete system for collecting, storing, querying, monitoring, and visualizing time series. Flux is the new language that ties it all together. However, Flux doesn't just work with InfluxDB. Its design lets users work with it outside of InfluxDB and it integrates with other storage systems and APIs. We'll look at some examples of integrations with other systems and see how Flux can be used to combine data from InfluxDB and other databases.

Modern microservice reliability with a service mesh

Microservice design is deliberately loosely coupled and decentralized, while you gain the benefit of high availability. One problem is that we need to implement particular network reliability patterns like Load Balancing, Circuit Breaking, Retries, and Timeouts, often as a “fat” network client in each service. In this talk, we will take a look in depth at these network reliability patterns and the benefits they give our systems. We will also see how we can leverage the power of the service mesh with Envoy and Consul Connect to implement them without the need for shared libraries and code changes.
